Difference Between Vishnu and Krishna

In Hinduism, the two deities, Vishnu and Krishna are the axis of whole ideology. They are considered to be same. Yet have some minor differences, for instance, Krishna is thought to be one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Hinduism. Vishnu is one of three main Gods. Other major deities being Brahma and Siva are said to be creator and destroyer of the world respectively. Vishnu is believed to be protector of the world.

Hindus believe that there are 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu to protect human races from evil power and protect righteousness. Among the 10 avatars namely, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasmiha, Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Balarama, Krishna and Kalki, Krishna is 9th avatar of Vishnu. The Kalki avatar is yet to incarnate in physical form.  Krishna had sixteen wives and he preached the legendary Bhagvad Geeta which emphasizes the value of Karma in humans for the betterment of their lives. Krishna is said to be living in Dwarka.

On the other hand, Goddess Lakshmi is spouse of God Vishnu. She is the goddess of prosperity and wealth. The milky ocean is said to be abode of Vishnu.  According to Hindu mythology, he is not born of any parents whereas Devki and Vasudeva are parents of Krishna. Krishna was brought up by foster parents Yasoda and Nandagopa.

Vishnu and his incarnations have come into existence and in physical forms on the Earth to kill demons.  For instance, Rama has killed Ravana and Krishna has killed Sisupala, Kansa and Narakasura. Vishnu, in Narasimha avatar killed Hiranya Kasipu.

Vishnu rests or reclines on the great serpent Adi Shesha, Krishna was brought up as cowherd. Even as a kid he killed several demons including Sakatasura, Bakasura and Putana.
