Difference Between Calories And Fat

The two terms calories and fat are often thought to be the same. However they are different and one should have a clear idea about them before they start comparing them.

Calorie can be defined as the unit to measure energy. So if there is a label that says 300 calories it means that consuming that quantity of substance will provide energy that is equivalent to 300 calories.

Apart from fats of course, there are various sources of calories. Most of the food stuffs that people eat are sources of calories. Thus we can say – though all fats are sources of calories, all the foods are eaten are not fats.

For the healthy maintenance of the body six nutrients are required. They are-

  1. Carbohydrates
  2. Vitamins
  3. Minerals
  4. Proteins
  5. Water
  6. Fats

Proteins, fats and carbohydrates are the sources of fat. The body gets approximately 4 calories by the consumption of 1 gram of protein and carbohydrate. However the 1 gram of fat is able to provide as much as 9 calories. There is another difference that concerns the utilization of fats and calories by the body. When a consumed food is digested then the calories within the food is released. If these calories are burnt out by means of physical activities, all will be normal. However if the food is stored in the body due to insufficient physical exercise then the calories are stored as fat. So even if people are consuming fat free food with less than minimum necessary physical activity then after some time the calorie will be stored as fat.

The cholesterol level of the body is raised by fat. This is the principle reason of cardiac attacks.

Fat containing foods like bacon and chips doo not have much nutritive values but a huge amount of fat. However foods like fish and meat are also rich sources of calories however they will provide you with essentials protein and vitamins. Thus they do have some nutritious value.

When compared to other food stuffs it is seen that the fats can deliver twice the amount of calories when compared to other foods. Thus we see that people has to consume twice the amount of proteins and carbohydrates to get the same quantity of calories.

One who is trying to control weight, not only the fat containing food, but also the calorie intake needs to be controlled. We need to be remember that the extra calories from the low fat food is stored as fat. The best way to stay fit is to restrict foods of high calorie food and to do more physical exercise.
