Difference Between Disagreement and Conflict

It’s often seen that the words conflict and disagreement are used interchangeably. Here is some of what the difference is and why it is important.

Disagreement

When people disagree, it means that everyone involved knows what everyone thinks. People talk to each other about what they disagree about, and everyone knows who is on which side. The defining element of disagreement is that people talk to each other. They talk with each other in affect, called the argument. Disagreement is all about content. People who have good manners and use it, you come out ahead after a disagreement, even when it goes into the fight. Missing some of the disagreement manners, those who disagree typically argue, using eg. control techniques or unfair arguments, and dirty tricks to get his side to win. A good argument ends up being able to talk afterwards, whether the dispute has led to an agreement or not. Sometimes you do not agree, but you can at least agree on what each side thinks and why, and to take into account each other’s different beliefs or opinions.

Conflict

When people are in a conflict, it means that one or more of the participants in the conflict, often all, do not talk to each other. The feelings are so strong and assumptions about counterparties so steep, it is believed that the party can not or will hear. Is often the case during a conflict that the participants are talking to everyone except the person concerned. The defining element of conflict is that people do not talk to each other. Conflict is all about form. Communication is based on assumptions, people go behind their backs on each other, and there is no desire to get the others in the meeting so that there will be a common understanding.

Why the difference is important

People who disagree, but not in conflicts are talking to each other. People in conflict do not speak with each other.

In situations where there be no distinction between disagreement and conflict, any discussion where feelings are strong – and in some cases, any controversy – be turned down to avoid conflicts. The result of this is:

* Disputes will not be discussed.

* Misunderstandings are not solved.

* Discussions will not be passed on.
