Difference Between Engineered Wood Flooring and Hardwood

 

A sturdy kind of wood acquired from angiosperm trees; those that bear flowers, is what we call hardwood. These days, hardwood is one of the most popular choices when it comes to choosing wood flooring. It’s available in all kinds of designs, shapes and colors, adding a decorative and elegant touch to people’s homes. Hardwood is naturally obtained and is perfectly non-allergic, making it very ideal for offices and rooms where we usually dwell in. One layer of hardwood flooring contains wood from different kinds of trees.

Aside from hardwood flooring, there is another kind of wood that is very popular: the engineered wood. Unlike most kinds of wood available in the market, engineered wood is natural. Engineered wood is composed of wood finish on its top and plain plywood at its bottom; thus we can say that it’s made of 100% genuine wood. The presence of plywood makes engineered wood stronger and more durable compared to regular wood flooring.

As you might have guessed, hardwood and engineered wood differ greatly from each other. One major difference lies in their composition. Hardwood flooring is composed of one layer of pure hardwood while engineered wood has plywood at its bottom and genuine wood on its top to increase strength and durability. Still, hardwood flooring is considerably harder compared to engineered wood, which is often available in thin layers. While some people prefer hardwood since it’s thick and made of pure hardwood, its high cost makes it the less popular choice among people who are on tight budgets compared to the more affordable rates offered by engineered wood.

Although its way more expensive; hardwood flooring does have a longer lifespan. Hardwood can last for more than 100 years, which is a whole lot longer compared to the 25-year lifespan of engineered wood floors. Hardwood is also easier to repair and maintain compared to engineered wood. However, engineered wood is more stable than hardwood floor. In contrast to hardwood floors which can easily be affected temperature and humidity because it only has one layer of solid hardwood, engineered wood’s shape or texture is not affected even if there are sudden changes in external factors like humidity and temperature. In basements and other areas like it, engineered wood proves more suitable. It is also better for kitchens since hardwood cannot stand the constant liquid spills which can easily damage it. Engineered wood flooring can withstand these and more, making it the better choice.

Depending on the kind of room you are trying to construct, the choice as to which kind of wood flooring to use is important and should be given careful attention.
