Difference Between Erosion And Corrosion

Both corrosion and erosion occur due to some external action on the surface. Corrosion is the destruction of the material through chemical reactions, while the erosion is of soil from the ground.

Corrosion is usually due to chemical reactions. Erosion caused by chemical reactions, and some forces of nature. Corrosion also means loss of electrons from the metal when exposed to moisture and oxygen in the atmosphere. Erosion caused by natural forces such as wind and water. Other factors such as acid rain, effects of salt and oxidants also known to cause erosion.

The process is electrochemical corrosion process, but erosion is a physical process. Corrosion occurring on metals is termed as rusting and can be evidently seen on the metal itself. Erosion is more of a natural process that displaces or carries away material from one place to another. For example, when sand is moved away from the beach or river bank, there is still sand by erosion. Corrosion is not so. When corrosion occurs, the material is converted into another compound called rust.

Different varieties of corrosion include galvanic corrosion, cracking, pitting, inter-granular and also the selective leaching corrosion. Erosion also involves several processes such as transport, weathering and the dissolution. Both corrosion and erosion are preventable. To prevent corrosion, a protective layer is applied on the metal surface that is constantly in contact with the atmosphere. Terraces of paths and tree plantation at a greater level can prevent the occurrence of erosion.
