Difference Between Glass Ceiling And Concrete Ceiling

Concrete ceiling as well as glass ceiling refers to the atmosphere of work that exists in an organisation. There exist certain differences between the two terms concrete ceiling andglass ceiling and these are stated below.

Both the terms are meant to depict the hurdles that are placed in the way of highly qualified people, especially women that result in limiting their growth in the professional field. In short both the terms concrete ceiling as well as glass ceiling means the hurdles and the difficulties that are faced by much deserving as well as qualified women and other employees of an organization so as to stop their careers from progressing and thus limiting them to posts that have to play lesser roles in the organization.

Glass ceiling is said to have been present in one’s life when that person is highly qualified for much higher post, but due to either religion based, or gender based or caste based or race based discrimination, he/she is not allowed to climb the ladder of success in his/her career. Discrimination on the basis of any kind of physical disability such as Blindness, Deafness or even age is also included in the Glass ceiling. This type of hurdle basically affects the career growth of women in an organization. This barrier is however a bit easier to break than the concrete ceiling, which also refers to a kind of barriers in the path of underprivileged qualified persons of an organization.

Concrete ceiling forms a kind of barrier which is solid and is usually encountered in the people belonging to the labor class. Sexual harassment can be seen in both the types of hurdles but are reported more in the case of concrete ceiling hurdles. Concrete ceiling is very difficult to get rid of and usually stops the Advancement of a qualified person in a stage that is neither too high nor too low.

Both the types of hurdles witness deviations and large margin of differences between the salary of two individuals doing the same work, belonging to a disliked religion or race and also lesser salary for women by regarding them incapable of performing certain activities.
