Difference Between Graduate and Masters
A graduate degree is usually called the master’s degree and is undertaken after completing undergraduate course, also known in bachelor’s degree western countries like USA, UK and Australia. While a bachelor’s degree is taken after 10 2, master’s degree is undertaken after completion of bachelor’s degree course. The bachelor’s degree requires the study in full-time for 3-4 years while the Master’s course has duration of two years. However, graduate degrees are not only master’s degree but also involve some degree for a PhD. There are differences in the masters and doctoral degrees for one that will be highlighted in this article.
Although both a master’s degree combines coursework and research, a PhD degree differs significantly from the master’s degree. Generally, both the two courses assume that students are well versed with the basic concepts of the subject and are ready for advanced learning in the chosen field of study. Graduate courses may be formal or informal; involving presentations, discussions, participation, research papers, seminars involving student groups etc and it is quite distinctive from the style of learning in courses undergraduate courses where faculty members are the primary mode of disseminating knowledge. Deeper study of a topic is characteristic of all graduate courses, or the master or a doctorate.
An important difference is in the use of credits that are the course requirements in master’s level degree course. These are called units or hours a student must complete a minimum number of credits to complete a course.
The Master’s course may be purely theoretical in nature as MA or MSc, or they can be professional in nature as M. Tech (called MS) in the United States and MBA. Professional master’s degrees have specific names as described above (MFA, MSW, or Mr. Ed). The Professional Master’s degree courses require more. Some of the professional master’s degrees do not automatically lead to work for a PhD after their completion. That is, they are terminal in nature, although students can still decide to pursue the thesis in their chosen subject.
The Ph.D. degrees are primarily undertaken by those who want to make teaching a profession as one can well be absorbed into the industry after the completion of the master and industries do not generally need someone who has a PhD degree. The doctoral degree is a graduate degree which is considered the highest point in learning about the subject and after subjecting his thesis and completing the degree of a doctorate one is entitled to become a lecturer at a college or university.
