Difference Between Gynecologist and Obstetrician

Gynecologist and Obstetrician are two medical professionals. They are associated with the treatment of women and child birth. They are specialist in this field.

A gynecologist is a specialist in treating diseases belonging to reproductive system in adult girls and women. On the other hand an obstetrician is specialist of problems concerning childbirth.  This is the basic difference between the two.

A woman with problems related to her reproductive system is diagnosed with a gynecologist. The problem in women may be related to the parts of her vulva and uterus or womb. An obstetrician on the other hand handles the complications arising during childbirth when a woman finds it difficult to deliver normally. This is the major difference between a gynecologist and a obstetrician.

Various tests of reproductive system such as endoscopy and laparoscopy etc. are conducted by a gynecologist. He conducts these tests to find out the problem in women’s uterus, womb, fallopian tubes etc. These tests are conducted to trace an infection or other diseases in women’s reproductive system.

An obstetrician on the other hand looks into the positioning of the womb of an expecting mother. He finds about the carriage and miscarriage during the pregnancy. He takes care of successful delivery of the child. He is equally concerned with the well being of the mother during the delivery. He sees to it if a cesarean is required or not.

An obstetrician carries out tests regarding the health of the womb of the pregnant woman. Some of the tests include positioning of the baby, fallopian tube functioning, movement of the baby in the womb etc. A gynecologist has sometimes to refer his cases to an obstetrician during the advanced pregnancy.

It can safely be said that a gynecologist cares for the initial stages of pregnancy. An obstetrician on the other hand takes care of the advanced stage of pregnancy.  The work of the both is interrelated but different.
