Difference Between Ibuprofen and Naproxen

A particular drug that belongs to the category of NSAIDs or anti-inflammatory drugs is Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen works by lowering the secretion of hormones causing inflammation and pain. These are used for the treatment of fever, pain and inflammation due to various types of back pain, headaches, arthritis and menstrual pain. On the other hand, there is also an NSAID naproxen drug, for the treatment of various conditions. Naproxen is used to treat inflammation and pain resulting from ankylosing, spondylitis, tendonitis, etc.

Here is a list of some of the side effects that may occur due to consumption of ibuprofen.

Minor gastrointestinal side effects

Dyspepsia

Nausea

Ulceration and bleeding

Increased liver enzymes

Headaches

Diarrhea

The retention of salt and fluid

Hypertension

Apart from these primary effects, ibuprofen also causes photosensitivity, because it is an active agent. You can also run the risk of myocardial infarction and inflammatory bowel disease as well. In addition, naproxen has a tendency to inhibition of an elevated excretion of lithium and sodium. Thus patients taking this drug are suggested to be careful when taking lithium supplements. Patients with hypertension are not recommended for this medicine. Pregnant women must not get into this medication in the first quarter because it can cause birth defects and abnormalities in the heart even then.

Ibuprofen is very similar to aspirin and it works similarly. It reduces the production of prostaglandins in the body by chemical reactions but they are different from the effects of naproxen as they introduce a lower level of irritation in the lining of the esophagus and stomach. Therefore, it is suitable for use by patients with ulcer. While on the other, naproxen, are prohibited for patients with ulcers, which can cause internal bleeding.

The effects of naproxen take 8 to 12 hours while ibuprofen has duration of only 4 to 8 hours.

1. Ibuprofen is used to treat back pain, arthritis, tooth ache, headaches and the cramps during menstruation whereas naproxen is used for the treatment of ankylosing, spondylitis, gout, bursitis, etc.

2. Ibuprofen causes certain side effects which include dyspepsia, nausea, myocardial infarction and diarrhea. Naproxen causes the excretion of lithium, cardiac abnormalities and other birth defects.
