Difference Between Inter and Intra

Inter and Intra are two prefixes that should be used with great accuracy after a careful understanding of their use. In fact the two prefixes should be used with the difference. Inter is a prefix which is indicative of the meaning ‘between’. On the other hand ‘intra’ is a prefix which is indicative of the meaning ‘within’. This is the main difference between the prefixes ‘inter’ and ‘intra’.

The prefix ‘inter’ is used to suggest the events as a competition, a review or a match between two associations, institutions, schools, colleges or other institutions as in the sentences

1. An inter-university basket ball competition was held last month.

2. An inter-school music event occurred the night before.

In the first sentence using the prefix ‘inter’ suggests that a basketball competition was held between two colleges. In the second sentence using the prefix ‘bury’ suggests that a music event occurred between two schools. This is the main difference between the two uses of prefixes, i.e. intra and inter.

It is interesting to note that the prefix ‘inter’ is used in the formation of several other words in a hyphen as ‘inter-disciplinary’, ‘intermediate’, ‘Inter-continental’ etc. The word ‘intra’ is also used in the formation of several other words like ‘intranet’, ‘intravenous’, ‘intramuscular’ etc.

On the other hand the prefix ‘inter’ is used in the creation of thousands of other words generally used as for example  interpersonal, interplead, interlude, internet, interpolate, interpretation, intersection etc especially in the sense ‘between’. The use of both prefixes ‘inter’ and ‘intra’ must be understood thoroughly. Now there is always the need to know the difference between ‘inter’ and ‘intra’.
