Difference Between Alpaca And Llama

Alpacas and llamas are from the same family of Camelidae. The two have been traced from Inca times. Although alpacas and llamas are in the same family they differ in many ways.

A major difference between the Alpaca and Llama is in their height and weight. The Llama is bigger than the Alpaca. While Alpaca weighs 100 lbs to 180 lbs the lama weighs 250 lbs to 450 lbs. The Alpaca has a height of five ft, while the Lama is of 6 ft height.

Alpacas can be distinguished from llamas by the look of their faces. In contrast to Alpaca, Llamas have more furs on their head. The Alpaca model can be described as a compressed appearances”. The ears of the Alpaca have a straight shape while llamas have the shape of a banana.

The outer covering is coarse in case of Llama and they have protective hair. Lama is short and has a fine undercoat. On the other hand, Alpaca have soft and silky hair. While Alpaca produces about 13 pounds of fiber, llama produces only 4 pounds of fiber.

Minute observation reveals that Alpaca lives in herd unlike llama that has an independent nature. When you look at their sexual habits, Alpacas reproduce every year and Llamas breed once after a gap of two years.

Another difference that is noticeable is that the Alpacas live at altitudes of 12,000 feet and llamas can live at heights below 8000 meters only.
