Difference Between JDK and JRE

JDK and JRE both have something to do with software and Java applications. However, there are many people that are confused with the functionality of each.

What is JRE?

JRE, also known as Java Runtime Environment, is what is needed to run Java applications. It is smaller in size and it is enough for running Java software. It includes runtime environments like the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) but not development tools like compilers or debuggers. However, because a Java application is supposed to perform in a wide variety of devices, there are more versions of JRE available than JDK.

What is JDK?

JDK, which stands for Java Developer Kit, is a software package that contains the necessary tools needed in order to write, compile, and debug Java applications. It is a bigger software that already includes JRE. There are also other features, such as the Java compiler, that are included only in the JDK and not the JRE. JDK is used by Java software developers.
