Difference between LCD TV and LED TV 

There are a lot of jargons being used in the television market that it becomes confusing to understand all of them. The most confusing, however, is the difference between LCD TV and LED TV. Technically, they are both LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, TV’s. The main difference between them is their backlighting.

LCD backlighting

The traditional LCD backlighting was called the CCFL, or the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp, which consists of a series of fluorescent tubes laid horizontally across the screen. This made it difficult for LCD TV’s to have a high contrast ratio.

LED backlighting

LED TV’s use Light Emitting Diodes (LED) as their backlights. There are three types of LED lighting: RGB Dynamic, Edge, and Full Array.

In RGB Dynamic, separate red, green, and blue LED’s are placed behind the LCD panel in order to create brighter colors. This allows for dimming in specific areas, thus, improving contrast ratio.

In Edge, white LED’s are placed around the screen’s edge and a special panel diffuses light across the screen to produce the color. This method allows for the slim designs that we see in the market.

Like in RGB, LED’s are placed at the back of the screen for Full Array. However, it does not allow for dimming to occur.
