Legends vs. Myths

Difference between Legends and Myths

Legends and myths are two words that almost always come after each other. Most people actually don’t know the difference between the two. All they know is that these were passed on from one generation to another, and have become a part of their folklore.

Since people in the olden times could not find explanations to natural events like thunders and lightning, they made up fictional stories to justify them. These fictional stories are what we now call myths and legends.

What is a Myth?

Myths are fabricated stories that were made to explain things that people did not understand. These stories usually involve god-like characters with supernatural powers. Generally, myths are those that attempt to explain natural phenomena and how the world began.

What is a Legend?

Legends can be somewhat be seen as a historical event. Unlike myths that use god-like characters, these stories use real people who did extraordinary things to explain how things came about. Because these stories have been passed on only by word of mouth, it is possible that they have been exaggerated through time. This makes legends as hard to believe as myths.

In summary:

  • Both myths and legends are stories that attempt to explain how things began
  • Myths are made-up stories that use god-like characters while legends use real people who did extraordinary things
  • Legends could be historical events but because they were only passed on by word of mouth, it is possible that they have been exaggerated through time
