Difference Between Noodles and Spaghetti

While Noodles and spaghetti are two of the most common food stuffs all over the world, they are also quite difficult to differentiate. While they are used interchangeably it should be known that they have their own set of history and place of origin. Noodles owe their origin to China whereas roots of spaghetti can be traced as far as Italy.

Though it originates in China, the word “noodle” comes from a German word “Nudel.’ It is mainly related to the Asian cuisine and there are a lot of Asian food stiffs that are made of noodles. Noodle is prepared from yeast less dough that is cooked in a mixture of boiling water and oil. After that it is either dried or refrigerated before cooking.

While it is one of the most popular pasta especially in the West, spaghetti is made of flour (semolina) and water.  It is usually cooked in salted water occasionally mixed with olive oil; the mixture then made to boil. There are different types of spaghetti of various thicknesses like spaghettoni – a type of thicker spaghetti which takes a little bit more time to cook. Then there are Spaghettini and vermicelli (angel hair spaghetti), they are called so due to their thin nature and they take very less time to cook.

The factor which makes noodles and spaghetti stand apart is their shape.  While noodles are thin and have an elongated structure, spaghetti is usually long, have variable thickness and a cylindrical shape. Noodles are more versatile than the spaghetti. Asian cuisine includes dishes of dried or cooked noodles with different varieties like Fried, chilled, noodle soup etc. However Spaghetti is cooked in a pot of boiling water after which it all comes down to the dish is being prepared as deferent type of sauce can be used to make the dish. It is served along with tomato sauce and herbs, vegetables , cheese, meat and spices.
