Difference Between Report and Essay

Essay and report are two words used commonly to mean the same . Strictly speaking the meaning is different when it comes to understanding the meaning of both words.

A report is a summary of an event to be precise while essay describes a historical event or character of a person. Mass communication is the basis for writing the report. On the other hand essay is based on literature. In other words we can say that journalism is the source to write a report. Literature is the source to write an essay.

You can write an essay on the use of metaphor (figure of speech) by Shakespeare based on the available literature for you. You will take the help of the available literature to write or prepare the essay. On the other hand you write a report of an event that occurred based on the first hand information available to you. You would have witnessed the event yourself to write the report.

You could not have witnessed that you write in an essay thus we can say that essay was taken from the literature while it is said that the report is taken from journalism or mass communication. Direct experience is involved in the report while it may not be so in case of essay. The poetic expressions are needed in the writing of an essay while this kind of creative writing is not necessary in writing a report.

In other words we can say that you will use creative writing in case of essay writing while you should use descriptive approach for writing a report. An essay is a literary form, while a report is one form of journalism. The tests are part of literature, while reports are not part of the literature.
