Difference Between Slang and Colloquial

Slangs are words or phrases which are used in informal conversation and are used only in certain specific contexts. There are different types of slangs which can be used by people in different professions, age groups and class of society. You must have heard schools students using certain words which are not used by common people. Similarly there are slangs used by sportspeople, college students etc and all of them may be different from each other.

Colloquial is form of a language which is restricted to a particular area or region. For example you can hear different forms of English in different parts of the world. Even if you compare the language spoken by people living in England and people in Scotland, you would hear different type of English and this is known as colloquial form of language. Even the same language may be difficult to understand by the people living in other regions. Colloquial forms of a language are developed over a period of time.

Slang vs. Colloquia

  • Slangs become very popular in short period of time while colloquial do not. They remain confined to the people in that particular region.
  • Scholars in linguistics often do researches on Colloquial terms while slangs are hardly a topic for any such research.
  • Slang is considered to be informal, funny and at times abusive while colloquial is a sober and serious element of communication
