Difference Between Socialism And  Democratic Socialism

Socialism is something that deals with the society no matter how it is, while democratic socialism is something that deals with the society which is democratic in nature. Socialism aims at keeping all the aspects of the society at equality while democratic socialism aims at maintaining equality in the state that is governed by democracy. To many people these two terms may appear to be one and the same and socialism does to some extent relate to democracy.

Socialism is a concept that aims at maintaining an equality among all the individuals of the society so that an equal distribution of all goods takes place and every individual of the society looks upon other individual as hi/her equal. Democratic socialism follows all the rules and regulations and principles of socialism but paying more emphasis on the democratic aspect of the society. Democratic socialism is also of the opinion that the government of democrats that governs the state should be chosen by the opinion of the general public that form the majority of the society. A proper voting in the fair manner should be carried out to achieve the purpose.

Socialism came into existence post industrial revolution as a result of the social as well as economic reforms that occurred then. The main followers of socialism were Karl Marx, Noel Babeuf etc., who were of the opinion that modernizing economy is possible only by the elimination of capitalism.

Democratic socialism became popular post World War I initially In Europe and then in the United States after Eugene V Debs. It is now a widespread concept in Asia as well as other parts of the world.

  1. Socialism can be defined as a system of collective ownership and management of the means of production and the distribution of goods. Democratic socialism gives more importance to a democratic character.
  2. Socialism is a concept that aims at treating all the individuals of the society as equals in all aspect while democratic socialism aims at keeping the power in the hands of certain democrats chosen by the people of the society, who serve as the representatives of the society.
  3. Democratic socialism follows all the rules, regulations and principles of the Socialism but with an added clause that democracy needs to be achieved by the fair voting of the public to choose the government of that society,
  4. Socialism gained its popularity after the industrial revolution as a result of the social as well as economic changes that happened then.
  5. Democratic socialism is a term that gained much popularity in the nineteenth century.
