The difference between Sore Throat and Strep Throat

I guess everyone in this world had an experience having pain on the throat or loss of voice for a couple of days. We tend to call it Sore throat but sometimes it is also called Strep throat. So which is which?

Sore Throat

A sore throat is what we mostly call it. It is the layman’s term for that itchy, painful experience we have on our throats sometimes. We call it sore due to the fact that we can barely speak; swallowing when eating is also a problem. This can be caused by many probabilities, some of which are bacteria, viruses, fungi, microbes, and other organisms. The chances of transmitting this illness to another individual are low compared to Strep throat but still, washing of hands and proper sanitation is highly recommended. With regards to treatment, it is treated depending on the causative agent.

Strep Throat

On the other hand, a Strep throat is a type of Sore throat which is caused by the Streptococcus bacteria. It has also other nicknames such as Streptococcal pharyngitis and Streptococcal Sore Throat. They are really difficult to differentiate regarding the symptoms you experience. They can be differentiated however with regards to the causative agent wherein Bacteria are only the one that causes a Strep Throat. Regarding transmission, Strep Throat is highly contagious, it can be transmitted through airborne, droplet, and vector. To elaborate it further, you can prevent the chances of spreading it by covering your mouth when you cough, sanitizing the door knobs you use in opening, chairs, tables, and many other things, in other words, always bring a hand sanitizer or a small alcohol. Also wash your hands regularly and dispose the tissues used properly. The treatment of this is with Antibiotics.

Brief Summary:

-Strep throat is a type of sore throat which is caused by Streptococcal bacteria while a Sore throat is the layman’s term used whenever we experience pain in the throat, itchiness, and difficulty in swallowing.

-A Strep throat is caused by a single bacterium called the Streptococcus bacteria. A Sore throat on the other hand can be caused by different causative agents such as bacteria, viruses, microbes, etc.

-Having a Strep throat makes you highly contagious compared to having a Sore throat.

-Treatment of a Strep throat is by means of taking certain Antibiotics, while a sore throat is treated depending on what may have caused it.
