Difference Between Simple and Complex Sentence

We write and speak any language with the help of sentences which are group of words arranged in a manner to make sense. Sentence is fundamental unit of language that has a meaning. There are simple, complex and compound sentences in English.

A simple sentence does not have any extra phrases and the words used in the sentence make sense. A simple sentence has a subject and a verb and it makes complete sense. When two simple sentences are joined together with the help of conjunctions, it is known as complex sentence. ‘And’ is the most commonly used conjunction while but, because, as, although, that, then, when etc are other conjunctions used in making complex sentences.

Let us take example of simple sentences:

There is one verb in simple sentences.

They have one idea.

We can create a complex sentence by using these two simple sentences.

Example: There is one verb in simple sentences and they have one idea.

You would find an independent clause in complex sentences and this clause has its own meaning even if not used in the sentence. For example he was present in the school when the principal announced the results. Here, ‘he was present in the school’ is independent clause while and the ‘principal announced the results’ is dependent clause.  These two clauses have their own meanings and have been joined with ‘when’. Dependent clause can appear after or before the independent clause in complex sentences.
