Difference Between Tumors and Cysts

Tumors and cysts are often used to mean the same thing. However, there are several differences between the two. Let’s check out the main differences between the two:

A cyst means closed sac containing fluid, gas or semi-water. A cyst can be formed anywhere on the body. Capsule is the outer wall of cyst. Tumors are also formed sometimes inside the body. In this case you can not see them with the naked eye, it will be visible on ultrasound.

A cyst may be due to various reasons. They can occur when there is infection in the body, clogging of certain glands like sebaceous gland or thyroid gland, or due to some foreign bodies. A cyst can also occur when there is obstruction of the flow of natural fluids in the body. A cyst may feel like a knot in the skin or just beneath the surface.

However, the reason behind the formation of tumor is not really understood. The only possible link that has been drawn is the individual’s genetic makeup that predisposes him to certain tumors

Since the cyst is usually filled with fluid or semi-solids, cysts are usually softer. However, the tumor is often hard when we touch it because it is a mass of tissue.

A tumor is less dangerous than a cyst. Only a malignant tumor can be dangerous while a cyst can e life threatening if left unattended. For example, a rapidly growing ovarian cysts can rupture and fill your stomach with its contents. This can be very dangerous for a woman.

Another difference between the two relates to fears of disease, cancer. Nearly 90% of all cysts in the human body are benign. This means they are not cancerous. The probability that the tumor is cancer is higher. While some cancers can cause cysts, the odds are lower
