Difference Between Voip and Sip

VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and SIP-which means Session Initiation Protocol, is one of the signaling protocols that is used in VOIP. Both VoIP and SIP are the same as in they are related to VOIP they have their own set of differences.

Voice over IP (VoIP) transfers voice over packet networks. While in the previous times people used PSTN networks and Mobile Networks to aid communication growth of internet and networking paved the way for voice over data networks along with carrier grade quality. To make it really simple, we can say that VoIP is all about voice calls over Internet.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is an application layer protocol used that is used to maintain (in terms of establishing, modifying and terminating) multimedia sessions like VoIP Calls. It can also create new sessions in addition to existing sessions exactly like a conference call.  SIP is a signaling protocol in VoIP that has the capacity to initiate, control and terminate a call. It can also generate Call Detail Record for billing purposes.

We can find that VOIP is used in modern telecommunication networks however SIP is a signaling/control protocol used in VoIP.
VoIP includes both Signalling and Media unlike SIP which indicates only the Signalling plane.
