Difference Between AFM And POH

Both AFM (Aircraft Flight Manual) and POH (Pilots Operating Handbook) are manuals for aircraft operations. They contain almost the same information however they do have a slight difference between them.

Pre-1979 manufactured aircrafts used to use the Pilots Operating Handbook that had the entire information that the maker feels important to operate the craft. Post-1979 aircrafts used Aircraft Flight Manual – the standard manual for flight operations.

Both Pilots Operating Handbook and Aircraft Flight Manual have operational marks and limitations for the airplane. When Pilots Operating Handbook covers just one particular aircraft model, Aircraft Flight Manual is specific for an airplane and there is no mandatory rule of matching a Aircraft Flight Manual with an aircraft. Aircraft Flight Manual can be used in place of Pilots Operating Handbook but Pilots Operating Handbook can never be used in place of Aircraft Flight Manual.

The Pilots Operating Handbook should always be updated and current. However there is no such need for Aircraft Flight Manual to be updated and current and serialized like the Pilots Operating Handbook.

The Pilots Operating Handbook also has information on GPS, STC’s that is relevant to the exact N number. In the current scenario Aircraft Flight Manual has replaced Pilots Operating Handbook in flight procedure.
