How are AIEEE and IIT different?

In India, AIEEE and IIT are the names of two major examinations that applicants must pass in order to be admitted into a school of engineering in the country. AIEEE is the acronym for All India Engineering Entrance Exam and is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). IIT is an acronym for the Indian Institute of Technology and it has its own exams. A passing score on this exam will permit a student to enter one of 15 IIT colleges throughout the country.

The government established the IIT through an Act of Parliament. The engineering schools that have this title are premier educational facilities designed to prepare the students to be skilled engineers that can really contribute in a significant way to the economic and social development of India. The 15 IIT’s India are located in the following cities: Kharagpur, Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Roorkee, Ropar, Bhubaneshwar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Jodhpur, Mandi and Indore. In addition, students can study at the IIT –BHU Varanasi, which is slated to become of the IIT’s in the near future.

Students who want to become engineers dream of being accepted into an IIT. AIEEE is second in importance but as long as those who apply are accepted into a university, that is all that matters. The IIT’s have their own entrance exams, called JEE’s (Joint Entrance Examinations) and this determines who gets accepted into IIT’s. No matter how high one scores on an AIEEE exam, this score will not permit entrance into an IIT.

On both exams the questions deal with physics, chemistry and math. However, the AIEEE is time oriented and the IIT exams are more concerned with making sure the students really understand the concepts of physics, math and chemistry. Speed and memorization can help a student score highly on the AIEEE, but not on the JEE.

Summary

  1. AIEEE and IIT refer to the entrance exams for engineering students in the colleges of India.
  2. Regional colleges base their selection on the scores of the AIEEE, but the IIT’s base their selections on the scores of the JEE.
  3. The AIEEE is regarded as the easier exam.
