Difference Between Asis and Asio

ASIS and ASIO are two Australian agencies involved in collection and analysis of information related to intelligence. Australian intelligence community has 6 units namely Office of National Assessments (ONA), Defense Signals Directorate (DSD), Imagery and Geospatial Organization (DIGO), Defense Intelligence Organization (DIO), Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) and Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS).

ASIS, DSD and DIGO are collection agencies, ONA and DIO are assessment agencies and ASIO is involved in both these activities along with formulation of policies and performing an advisory role.

Two understand the differences between these two agencies let s consider following points:

  • ASIO is national security service agency which gathers and produces intelligence related information while ASIS is national intelligence agency that collects intelligence information about the agencies, the countries, the corporations and even the individuals that can affect the national security, economic stability and foreign relation of the country.
  • The perspective of ASIS is wider than ASIO
  • ASIS was established in 1952 by an executive order while ASIO was established by a parliamentary act in 1979. ASIO is responsible to parliament through Attorney General.

Central offices of these agencies are in Canberra. ASIS works under department of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and can be understood as an organization of the standards of CIA of US, RAW of India, ISI of Pakistan and other similar intelligence agencies.
