Difference Between Catholic Church and Protestant Church

Both the Catholic & Protestant, religions together have the highest number of followers or believers in the world. Both believe in Jesus as His death on the cross for our sins. There are many differences among the two great religions making it difficult to understand the truth. Both religions have tried over the years to find common ground, but both have strong faith and belief that we could not change the other.

The Catholic Church has had a rich and colorful history which lasted for decades. The apostles and Christian converts have traveled the world to spread the word of God and in this way, by popularizing Catholicism. The religion has been spreading all over the world very rapidly like the fire in the jungle and their main belief is that the church was founded by Jesus Christ. The church has had many struggles during the early days of Christianity and was reduced accordingly through legalization of the church by the Emperor Constantine I. The Catholic Church believes that Sunday was the first day of worship since then Sunday is, even today, considered the first day of the week.  In the beginning, Christianity was loosely organized, which lead to various explanations of the word of God.

The Protestant Church began in the late 1500s. They really were part of the Catholic Church when they decided to separate from the church. The separation was caused by differences in beliefs and interpretations. They believed that the church involved in many wrong practices and teachings. They protested these practices of the church and believed that the only source of knowledge is Bible, not the tradition and historical individuals. This group of protestors has built their own church and taught with the ways they thought were right and true.

The main differences between the two groups are on matters of authority. The Catholic Church believes in the word of God proposed through the Bible and tradition. They believe in many doctrines of the Catholic Church to be just as binding to the word of God. Catholics believe in purgatory, praying to the saints, worship and veneration of Mary the mother of Christ. Although almost all these practices have no considerable basis in Bible, Catholics believe that both the Bible that traditions play an important role in the salvation of humanity.

Protestants believe further that only the Bible has the authority or they call “Sola Scriptura”. They believe that the word of God alone should be the only source of our faith and traditions are insignificant. They do not worship the Virgin Mary because it is simply the physical mother of Christ. Protestants believe that there are books in the Catholic Bible that are not blessed by God to become His word so they should be removed.

Lot of heated discussions between the two religious groups has been taking place. There are more differences that can be quoted as both are firm on what they believe to be true. The gist here is your faith. Regardless of which religious group you are affiliated to, it is all related to your personal faith. You may believe in Supreme Being or a real person who has been sacrificed on the cross for our salvation, your faith should stand firm.
