Difference Between Cholesterol and Triglycerides
Triglycerides and cholesterol both belong to the class of lipids (fat). They are important to our lives, yet in excess they can make trouble in our body. Tri glyceride ester is formed by three fatty acids and glycerol. Cholesterol has a different structure and is synthesized in the liver or taken from dietary cholesterol. Cholesterol is important to produce steroid hormones and cortisol. They are important hormones for human life and function. Cholesterol is required for membrane fluidity of cell membrane.
The level of cholesterol in the blood should be maintained in an optimal level. Cholesterol level is usually checked after 14 hours of fasting. The reference range may vary from lab to lab. Yet the common rule is total cholesterol should be less than 200mg/dl. There are different types of cholesterol in the body. The High density lipo protein (HDL) considered the good cholesterol in the body. Low density lipo protein (LDL) is considered the bad cholesterol in the body. In reality HDL brings cholesterol to the liver from the tissue. Cholesterol is deposited by LDL in tissue and blood vessles. Triglycerides can be converted to cholesterol in the liver. An excess in the level of triglyceride also needs to be controlled and treated.
The deposition of cholesterol in the blood vessels (especially in the coronary arteries supplying the heart) causes angina and heart attack. If it blocks the vessel in the brain, stroke can happen. Treatment for high cholesterol is control diet as well as the statins (example- atravastatin). Statins can affect the liver. So the control system is considered the best option.
Regular exercise will help reduce levels of LDL and triglycerides and increases HDL levels. And avoiding fast food that contains oil, regular exercise and statins help prevent heart attack and help lead the good and extended life.
