Difference Between Dentist and Orthodontist

The dentist and orthodontist are both doctors of teeth and oral care. We are all aware of the dentists and they do, but are a little confused when we hear the term orthodontist. The confusion is more like a dentist as well as orthodontist deal with same dental problems (teeth and overall oral health). However, both differ by specialization and the care they provide to dental problems. This article will make the difference between the two types of doctors to enable a person to choose the services of tooth doctor when facing a problem related to teeth and gums.

Dentists are doctors who have completed med school and have also completed their post graduate training at a dental college to be qualified to practice as a dentist. These are doctors who specialize in problems of the teeth, gums, tooth decay, repair harmed tooth and tooth extraction etc. They help people in general coping with dental problems and also help in achieving the best oral health. Orthodontists are other dentists who have special additionally completed a residency program (2 years) on orthodontic education after post graduation. They help people with tooth and jaw alignment problems and are experts in cosmetic surgery procedures to correct such misalignments. They specialize in diagnosis and treatment of alignment of teeth using the latest technology. To a layman, such a doctor addresses the problem of crooked teeth.

To be able to provide corrective treatment methods, orthodontics undergo intensive study of movement of teeth. Thus the difference between a dentist and orthodontist is very simple. A dentist called an orthodontist after specializes in a branch of dentistry called orthodontics by taking a residency program of 2-3 years and advanced orthodontic courses. Orthodontists are exposed to special skills related to tooth movement and special methods to correct irregularities of the face.
