Difference Between Dromedary and Bactrian Camel

Bactrian and of dromedary are the two species of the camel worldwide. As a result, it is important to discuss their difference and their similarities. Two of them are even – ongulés belonging to Order: Ceratodactyla. These two camels are easily recognizable by their physical appearance, but other similar and different characteristics are important to discuss. They are originally from Asia, and most of them are domesticated than wild. The wild populations of the camel of Bactriane species are considered as disappeared, but reside in captivity in some areas.

Dromedary Camel

Dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) is an animal completely domesticated and can survive in the wild state. It is also known as the camel of Arabia and the ranges of domestic distribution of these camels are from North and the Northeast of Africa and across the country of Middle East and Pakistan in western India. Wild populations of these camels are found in the central regions of Australia. They are huge with 400 – 600 kilograms in weight, more than two meters in height, and three meters long. Broadly adapted to a life in the desert with a bump, composed of adipose cloths, on the back, grease inside the bump stores and produces some water by a process of the metabolism with the oxygen which is taken while breathing. Besides, fat in the rest of the body is minimal and gathered in the bump as a result, heat is not trapped I other parts of the body. This process keeps the camel hydrated without being in superheating cinditions in the desert, another adaptation achieved to the life of the desert. They possess thick eyelashes and hairy ears. A camel dromedary gets matured sexually at an age of around three to four years and the period of gestation is more than year. They could normally live until 40 years.

Bactrian Camel

The camel of Bactriane is now considered as no more but status is not confirmed yet. However, the domestic and wild camels of Bactriane species are scientifically knownwith two names of kinds (wild – Camelus ferus; servant – Camelus bactrianus). The last wild populations of these camels were recorded from the northwest of China and south of the regions of Mongolia. The weight of a camel of Bactriane can vary from 400 – 800 kilograms. The height can go beyond meters and have a huge physique. The characteristics of a camel of Bactriane are the presence of two bumps on the back of the body. The function of a bump increases as they double in the case of a camel of Bactriane who have two of them, allowing them to survive in a vast range of temperatures (between the ice cold and the warmth of baking). A camel of Bactriane can survive without water for more than two months as they can form produce some water by processing the fats stored in the bumps.  They drink up to 60 liters of water at the same time. There is a presence of long hairs all over the body and also a mane or long hairsthat are present around the face as well as the head in case of the males of Bactrian species. They attain sexual adulthood at about 4 years and the period of hard gestation about 14 months. The life could go until 40 years.

Difference between the camel and the dromedary camel

Being from the same type, Camelus, these two camels leaves some interesting adaptations and unique future. Both bumps of Bactriane and bump in the dromedaries have same but differentiating features. Woolly fur and mane on the camels of Bactriane make them more unique and the thick eyelashes and hirsute ears make dromedaries more unique.
