Difference Between ego and id

What is the difference between ego and id?

Ego and id are two terms that were brought into the field of psychology in 1923 by the research and studies carried out by Sigmund Freud, a famous psychoanalyst. They are two components of the human psyche. This article will provide a brief overview of the differences between them.

What is ego?

Ego is the part of our psyche that helps us to distinguish between reality and fantasy. This includes having a sense of justice – both for yourself and for others. Because of the ego, you are able to make plans for the future and be organized in what you plan to accomplish in the short term as well as the long term. It refers to the common sense that all people possess and allows you to be able to have a perception of the world around you. It also helps you to have subconscious thoughts.

What is id?

The id is the essence of instinct that all humans possess. The primary goal of the id is to bring you satisfaction first before you think of anyone or anything else around you. Because of this component, we crave pleasure and we do not like pain of any kind. It is the selfish nature that we all have and this is essential so that we can take care of ourselves. It is not something that you can learn because it is present at birth.

How id differs from ego

Id is instinct and is what makes us act impulsively. As children it is hard to control this but adults have learned how to maintain some measure of control. Ego develops as we get older and because of this we become more aware of the things around us and how our actions can affect them. Everyone develops a different ego with some people being more arrogant than others. Both id and ego are essential for us to function in society.

  1. Id is a component of the human psyche that is primarily concerned with attaining self-satisfaction.
  2. Ego makes us aware of the difference between reality and fantasy.
  3. Id is innate, but ego develops.
