A look at the difference between the EU and the UN
EU stands for European Union, which is made up of 27 European countries that combined in 1995 for political and economic reasons. All of the countries retain their independence but there is a parliament for the EU. Elections are held every five years and those who participate in the elections are all citizen of EU countries. The decisions made by the Parliament and the many committees that are part of the Union are alls based on the opinions and needs of the member countries.
The European Union has a single market for which a set of laws were developed and applied to all the member countries. It is responsible for ensuring the maintenance of the movement of people and goods across the borders. In 2010, the population of the EU was about 500 million and the Union generates about one-quarter of the economy.
The United Nations is an international organization that was founded in 1945 at the end of the Second World War. It has 192 countries of the world as members who work together to bring about peace in the world and cooperate in legal, security and economic matters. The primary goal in establishing this organization was to create a platform where dialogue could take place in an attempt to prevent wars from occurring.
There are six main levels to the administration of the UN:
- Security Council
- General Assembly
- Secretariat
- Economic and Social Council
- International Court of Justice, and
- UN Trusteeship Council
In addition to the many committees that are part of the organization the UN works with the World Health Organization and the World Food Program. All languages of the member countries are supported at meetings of the UN.
Difference between the EU and the UN
The purpose of the European Union is to provide the European countries that are members of the organization to have a common platform for marketing their products and in this way the continent can have a unified economy. The UN is an international organization with the aim of providing the countries of the world with a platform where problems can be ironed out and discussed before they reach the stage of aggressive conflict. It tries to prevent war in the world.
