Difference Between Hard Water and Soft Water

We have read in the books of science in the school about hard water and soft water. We always hear about it. What is the difference between hard water and soft water? Which type of water is supplied in our houses? Let us discuss about the each type of water to find the difference between them.

Hard water contains a lot of dissolved minerals. The main contents in hard water are calcium and magnesium. On the other hand the only ion present in soft water is sodium.  It is treated before supplying to our houses. Rainwater is soft. When it goes under the ground, a lot of minerals like calcium, lime and magnesium are mixed in it. These elements are necessarily required in our bodies. Therefore it is beneficial for our health to drink hard water. Soft water tastes salty. However people prefer soft water in the households. Why? Let us know.

Soaps and detergents do not make lather when clothes and dishes are washed with hard water. It also leaves films in the form of spots on clothes and dishes. Our hair looks dull and listless when washed with hard water. The reason for is that soaps have to fight the elements of hard water and fail to wash clothes and dishes properly. Another benefit is that soft water does not leave the residues in washing machines and dishwashers and the life is prolonged. It is easy to wash clothes and dishes in soft water and in this way saves energy.

Soft water is not good for our health though it is good for washing clothes and dishes. It has no elements which are necessary for our health. Soft water contains sodium which is not good for our heart. Therefore, people use reverse osmosis (RO) and distillation to have better taste and minerals. Treated in this way, water is then good for all purposes. It is good for our skin as well as our health.
