Difference Between Have To and Must

Have to and must are two words in the English language which should be known differently. These are the two words of English language that are considered as same by some but have entirely different meanings.

‘Have to’ is the term that is used to indicate a vibe of ‘necessity ‘as in the sentences.

1. You have to drink enough water on a daily basis.

2. I have to work for three hours a day to achieve results.

In both sentences you can see that the word ‘have to’ is used in the sense ‘of necessity’. In the first sentence the meaning would be ‘it is necessary that you drink enough water on a daily basis to be healthy’. The second sentence would mean ‘ it is necessary that I should work for three hours a day to accomplish the desired results.

On the other hand the word ‘must’ be used to indicate the meaning of ‘compulsion’ as in the sentences

1. You must be in time to receive the job.

2. I must go now and meet him.

In both sentences you can see that the word ‘must’ is used to mean ‘compulsion’. In the first sentence you can see that the meaning of the sentence would be ‘it is mandatory that you should be in time to get the job’. On the other hand it is understood that ‘if you are late you will not be getting the job. In the second sentence the meaning is ‘it is mandatory that I should go today itself to meet him. Furthermore it is understood that’ if I do not go now to meet him my purpose will not be fulfilled’.
