Difference Between i.e and e.g
They are two abbreviations used in which have a lot of differences in the usage.
i.e.
The term i.e comes from ‘id est’ in Latin. It means ‘that is’. In normal cases i.e. is used to explain the statement which it precedes. Example- ‘You should brush your teeth twice a day (i.e., morning and evening).’ In the example the usage of i.e. can be seen.
e.g.
The term e.g. on the other hand is from ‘exempli gratia’ which means ‘for the sake of example’ in Latin. Unlike the i.e. e.g. is used while listing out examples for a term or a supposition that was stated before. It is customary that people remember e.g. as ‘example given’. Example, ‘They are various types of music. (e.g. rock and blues)’. In the example you could see the usage of e.g.
Both i.e. and e.g. should be used within the parenthesis and they should be in lower case. They are followed by periods. The two letters within the abbreviations are also separated by periods. It is important that the final period should be followed by a comma. People forget to write the comma after the final period while using either of the abbreviation.
