Difference Between Impact and Effect
The impact and effect are two words that are often confused when it comes to their senses. The impact of word is used to mean ‘influence’. On the other hand the word ‘effect’ is used to mean ‘result’. This is the main difference between the two words impact and effect.
Look at the two sentences
1. The incident has a great impact on his conduct.
2. The sound system has a good effect.
In the first sentence the word ‘impact’ is used to mean ‘influence’. It only means that ‘the incident has a great influence on his conduct. “In the second sentence the word ‘effect’ is used to mean ‘income’. The sentence would mean ‘the sound system produces a great result. ”
The word ‘impact’ is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’, and sometimes it is followed by the preposition ‘for’ as in the sentence ‘The impact of his speech was considered’.
The effect often refers to the result or the consequence of an action. Its noun form is ‘efficacy’.
The impact does not indicate a consequence but then it involves only the influence of an action. The use of the word ‘impact’ means ‘power’ while the use of the word ‘effect’ means ‘the result’. This is the main difference between the two words.
It is interesting to note that the word ‘effect’ to other shapes as in the adjective ‘effective’ in the adverb ‘effectively’ and other such other hand the word ‘ impact’ is used as a noun. It is not used as an adjective and as an adverb. This is another important difference between the two words. It is generally said that any cause will have its own effect. This means that an effect is preceded by a cause.
