Difference Between In Future and In The Future

‘In future’ and ‘in the future’ are two phrases that are frequently befuddled in spite of the differences between them. The word ‘in future’ is used as informal words in sentences

1. I will not commit the same mistake in future.

2. He said he will receive it in future.

In both sentences the phrase ‘in future’ is used in the meaning ‘again’ and ‘later’, respectively in the informal sense. In the first sentence we get the sense ‘I will not commit the same mistake again’. In the second sentence we get the meaning ‘He said he will receive later’. Thus we can say that the phrase ‘the future’ is indicative of meaning ‘again’ and ‘later’ as the context in which it is used.

On the other hand the expression ‘in the future’ is used in the sense ‘the time to come’ and is used in the formal sense. Look at the two sentences

1. I will not commit the same mistake in the future.

2. He said he will receive that in the future.

In both sentences the phrase ‘the future’ is used in the sense ‘the time to come’ and in the formal sense. In the first sentence we get the sense ‘I will not commit the same mistake in time to come’. In the second sentence we get the meaning ‘He said he will receive that in time to come’. Thus we can say that the phrase ‘the future’ is indicative of the meaning ‘in time to come’. Both expressions should be used precisely and with care by the author to suggest the exact meaning he or she wanted to convey.
