Difference Between Iron and Gold

Iron and Gold are both metals that have lots of differences as far as their properties are concerned. While both Iron and Gold are transition metals the chemical symbol of Iron is Fe and that of Gold is Au.

Both of them have different atomic number. While the atomic number of gold is 79 the atomic number of iron is 26.

Iron is the most common element that found in the Earth’s core (both inner and outer) and the fourth most common element that is found in the Earth’s crust. However Gold is found as nuggets on rocks and alluvial deposits.

Apart from its excellently shiny and soft appearance the pure form of gold is extremely malleable and ductile. However iron is found in the same solid form as gold, it is not as malleable and ductile as gold.

The atomic weight of metal gold is 196.96 g mol whereas that of iron is 55.845 g mol. While gold has a boiling point of 2856 degree Celsius iron needs 2862 degree Celsius of temperature to boil.

The melting point of iron is 1538 degree Celsius while the melting point of gold is 1064.18 degree Celsius.

As far as cost is concerned gold is extremely valuable than iron. Gold has a yellow color however in fresh condition iron has a silver color. One quality that sets gold and iron apart is that iron rusts when in contact with water unlike gold which does not rust. Also iron has magnetic capacities whereas gold has no such qualities.

While gold is not that active chemically, iron is chemically very active. Gold can dodge individual acids but is helpless against the mixture of acids “aqua regia”. This mixture can dissolve gold. Gold has a density of 19.03 grams per cubic centimeter while the density of iron is 7.87 grams per cubic centimeter.
