Difference between Labrador and Golden Retriever

One of the most favorite and well loved breed of dogs in the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom are the Labradors and the Golden Retrievers. The popularity of the breed of these dogs is so high that they have become an integral part of the family life of millions across these countries, even though they are brought up as hunting dogs.

The Labradors are lovingly called Labs while the Golden Retrievers are fondly inferred to as Goldies. Both these dogs bear a striking resemblance to each other and are deemed to be extremely loyal and friendly dogs. There is an element of confusion between the Labs and the Goldies due to their similar appearance, yet they are entirely different. The illustrated differences between them would remove the confusion thus assisting people in selecting one of the two breeds as per their requirements.

Both the Labradors and the Golden Retrievers are fun loving and human friendly dogs. The Labs tend to become more hyperactive while the Goldies are of a laid back nature. The Goldies are far more relaxed as compared to the Labs who are proactive and excited.

When it comes to the energy levels, both of them are active breeds and are trained and bred primarily as hunting dogs. The Labradors usually have a muscular physique and therefore have a far better enthusiastic demeanor as compared to the Golden Retrievers. The Labradors also have a slightly varied bone structure and are a bit taller than the Golden Retrievers. Since the average muscle mass is higher in Golden Retrievers, Labradors have an sporty constitution in comparison. Goldies are prone to become overweight due to the lower activity levels. The average weight of the fully grown up Goldies is between 55 to 75 pounds while the Labradors can weigh even more than 100 pounds. That is one of the basic reasons that the Golden Retrievers are less energetic as compared to the Labradors. Yet, the Labradors have a tendency to have an edge over the Golden Retrievers in terms of active levels.

There is a tendency amongst the Labradors and the Golden Retrievers to shed hair. On account of the thick fur, the Goldies require more grooming whereas on the other hand, Labradors with their water resistant furs require only shampooing in a fortnight. However, tangles in the fur of Goldies are required to be cleared more often. The need for oiling of the coat of Goldies is also not essential as in the case of Labradors.

There is a vast difference even in the appearance of the Golden Retriever and the Labrador. The coat of the Labradors comprises of two layers, which is a thick and soft under layer that offers them a safety to them against are sharp differences in temperature. The external layer of the coat is both soft and oily and is therefore water resistant. In contrast, the Golden Retrievers have a coat that is thick and furry and is not resistant to water. Further, the fur of both the Golden Retriever and the Labradors are different in shades and hues. The Golden Retrievers sport a fur ranging from dark to light golden color while the color of the fur in Labradors varies between black to chocolate. Labradors are also found to have furs that are silver and grey charcoal and silver. More often, there are stripes and spots found on both the breeds of dogs.
