Difference between LP and EP

The LP and the EP meaning Long Play and Extended Play are terms that had been a commonplace names ever since the launch of vinyl in the bygone era. Even though the current names of the Compact Disk are from the present era, yet these terms are still in use. Both these kinds of records have well established historical origins and have been consistently evolving in the arena of music.

The LP or the Long Play is regarded as the original vinyl and is characteristically a full album. There are about ten to twelve tracks on the LP and is promoted by the artist a great deal. The LP is usually released in a twelve inch format and plays for around forty to forty five minutes. For decades, the LPs ruled the roost and enjoyed immense popularity till the point when it gave way for cassette tapes which were portable in nature and carved the niche for another record making trend.

The Extended Play or the EP was released in the first place to move up against the more famous LP which containing three to five tracks generally played for less than half an hour. The EP was usually used to offer samples of musical albums or an array of single songs from different artists under the same record label. This was due to the fact that the EP was not able to attain the similar acceptance as the LP.

The EP offers a more close association as it is composed essentially of selected single songs which reflect the style and genre of the artist while the LP catered for a broad spectrum in the selection of songs as it consisted of more tracks. It would be surprising to observe that the idea of the LP and the EP is still widespread even today even though it is no longer offered in vinyl phonographs. The LP containing ten songs as per the industry standards is measured to be a full album. The basis of the record success is gauged for the most part on the sales of an LP. The EP on the other hand is importantly being taken up as a means of advancing single songs for artists who are aspiring to become popular singers.

Considering the fact that it is much more economical it also indicates towards a much faster way to record and bring to the fore the songs of artists. The LPs and EPs proffer tracks which the audience raves on and wants to hear. Yet as long as they are contented with what is played, the quantity would not be much of a consideration. In a nutshell, it all boils down to the creativity of the artist and the subjective preferences of the audience to measure the quality of this art that is popularly known as MUSIC.
