Difference Between MBBS and MD

MBBS and MD degrees are for medical courses and are different from each other. It is important to know that the expansion is the MBBS Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery. On the other hand the expansion of MD is Doctor of Medicine.

The student gets the eligibility to practice as a physician or a doctor only after completing MBBS which is an undergraduate degree. On the other hand MD is a Masters or a post graduate level degree.

A candidate becomes eligible for MD only after he or she has completed the MBBS degree. Now MBBS qualification is considered essential to go for any post graduate degree in medicine or for higher studies in medicine.

MD is more of a specialization course while MBBS is basic degree. During the MBBS course, the student undergoes training in all aspects of understanding of medicine, materia medica etc. He has to study all the branches of medicine in general. This is why it is the basic degree.

On the other hand in MD degree the student receives a specialization in a particular branch of medicine such as pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, dentistry and others like it. They may choose any specialization and will be given training that is more practical in nature. The student gets specialization in the branch of medical science that he or she chose.

MBBS is done usually in a period of 4 ½ years while MD can be accomplished in a period of 2 years. Many universities and colleges around the world have made the submission of thesis and dissertation for completion of the course and getting the degree.

It is interesting to know that you can practice as a doctor even after completion of MBBS degree.
