Difference Between Milk Allergy and Lactose Intolerance

The allergy of milk and the intolerance of lactose are two very different concepts, but they are still placed by much confusion. Many people have a hard time distinguishing one of the other even if two conditions have little or less common features.

According to the statistics, it has been noticed that  1-7 % of all the children on the world have a form of allergy towards the milk. The allergy of milk is an unfortunate response from the immune system as a response to the consumption of proteins found in the milk or milk products. These proteins can be the protein of whey or the casein.

On the consumption of such products, the victim who is allergic to milk will develop hives. The much more serious cases will end to some modifications in the breathing.

Although it is not habitual for the people to have this allergy, there are more cases where a person develops a form of the sensitivity to such products. This particular sensitivity drives to eruptions and gastric disorders. If the consumption of products of milk is not stopped, the victim will develop pulmonary chronic problems and will have a limited tendency of absorbing nutrients. Because of the nature of this condition, the allergies of milk are better directed by the avoidance of the milk.

On the other hand, the intolerance of lactose is completely different. Majority of the people around the world are partially intolerant to lactose although the level of intolerance is not so significant.

The problem with this condition is the lactose found in the milk. This is a species of sugar that can be digested only by the help of the enzyme that happens naturally in the body. The problem with many persons is that they have a short supply of this one enzyme. As a consequence, they could not take in so much lactose or they will end up having a form of the indigestion. When the people age, they become less tolerant to the consumption of lactose of the milk.

In contrast to allergies of milk, the intolerance of lactose is less severe, often not life threatening. Apart from the avoidance of products of milk, one can treat himself with simply taking in enzymes artificially.


The allergy of milk is a form of sensitivity to proteins present in milk while the intolerance of lactose is a form of sensitivity to lactose.


The allergy of milk is a condition more serious than the intolerance of lactose.
