Difference Between Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry

There was a time when it was thought that organic chemistry was a study of chemical compounds that make up the living organisms an the scientists were of the opinion that these compounds possess the power and vitality that are in no way found in the compounds constituting the non-living objects. However, the situation underwent a drastic change when the German scientist Wohler showed that the organic substances found in living creatures could easily be converted to inorganic substances found in non-living things. Today, the difference between organic and inorganic chemistry is expressed in terms of the occurrence of the element carbon. The study of organic chemistry refers to the study of compounds that contain carbon while inorganic chemistry is the study of all those compounds that do not have carbon.

It may seem that the study of inorganic chemistry is so broad as it includes the study of all the substances that do not have carbon, but the very fact that there are over ten times more carbon containing organic compounds than the inorganic ones ridicules the previous statement. There are over 10 million carbonic compounds on our planet and thus organic chemistry has a much broader field as compared to the inorganic chemistry. It is because of the unique ability of carbon atoms to combine with other carbon atoms in long chains. It’s not just the chain. Carbon atoms have the capability of linking together in all sorts of geometric forms, and so hundreds and even thousands of carbon atoms are able to join into a single compounds. It is this unique property that distinguishes carbon from all the other elements.

This uniqueness of carbon atom lies in the presence of four valence electrons that allow carbon atom to make associations in all four directions. The bonds made by the carbon atom are very strong because of its low atomic number. As a result, the initial concept that organic chemistry is the study of compounds making living organisms is now obsolete and today organic chemistry is all about study of carbon and its compounds. Carbon is a very unique element. It not only has the ability of linking on all four directions, but can also attach to all the different types of elemrnts thus facilitating the creation of millions of carbonic compounds.

Called the most basic speaker carbon hydrocarbons as they are compounds of carbon and hydrogen only. There are saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons and can be the type of ring or open chain hydrocarbons.

Inorganic chemistry deals with the reactions and the synthesis of inorganic pregnant. It finds wide applications ranging in all sorts of industries such as surfactants, medicine, fuel, agriculture, material science and even space research. Inorganic Chemistry is composed of all the ions and salts. Almost all medicines are the result of research in inorganic chemistry. The study of all metals, alloys and their industrial applications is the basis of inorganic chemistry. In short, inorganic chemistry is the backbone of any industry today as it allows scientists to understand the behavior of elements and their reactions to use the best in the industry and in our daily lives.
