Difference Between Practice and Practice

Practice and Practise are two words that are often confused when it comes to their use. In fact there is a minor difference between the two words according to the British English while in the American style of English the difference between these words is almost non-existent.

The word ‘practise’ is only used as a verb and it can’t be used as noun. Look at the two sentences:

1. He practised the guitar for about two hours every day.

2. She practised the art of painting regularly.

In case of the above two examples it can be seen that the word ‘practice’ is used only as a verb which indicates an action. In case of the first example it is used to indicate the action of practising the guitar. On the other hand in the second sentence it is used to indicate the action of practising the art of painting. In short we can say that the word ‘practise’ is used to mean ‘do something several times’ to get perfection in what you do.

On the other hand the word ‘practice’ is only used as noun and it can’t be used as a verb. Look at the two sentences:

1. It is normal practice.

2. This practice has existed for long now.

In both the sentences mentioned above you can see that the word ‘practice’ is used noun and in the sense of ‘something done regularly’. In the first sentence the word ‘practice’ is used to indicate something which is done regularly. In the second sentence the word ‘practice’ is used to indicate that some action has continued a long time. This is the important difference between the two words ‘practise’ and ‘practice’. You will understand the difference with accuracy.
