Difference Between Static Vlan and Dynamic Vlan

The Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a set of ports chosen by the switch as fitting in to the similar broadcast domain. Manual configuration is done to the Static VLANs and a name along with VLAN ID and allocation of ports is provided. In dynamic VLANS the hardware addresses of devices in a host database are kept same, so that a switch can allot the VLAN with dynamism at all times. VLANs have a feature to group users not by their physical location but by their logical function

What is Static VLAN?

Static VLANs are also known as Port-based VLANs are created by allocating ports to a VLAN manually. After connection to the port, a device automatically finds the VLAN to which the port is connected. If the user changes the port and should always have access to the same VLAN, the network administrator must manually allocate the port to the VLAN. Static VLANs are typically used to reduce emissions and increase safety. Since static VLANs have a small administrative overhead and they offer better security than usual switches, they are widely used. Another strong point of static VLANs is their ability to control where the user moves in a large network. Allocating specific ports on the changes in the network, network administrators can control the approach and limit the network resources that can be used by users.

What is Dynamic VLAN?

As talked about previously, dynamic VLANs are made by allocating the host to a VLAN when host is plugged in a switch by the use of hardware addresses from database. A central server called VMPS (VLAN Membership Policy Server) is used by dynamic VLANS. VMPS is used to manipulate configurations of each switch port on the network of VLAN. The VMPS server contains a database that contains MAC addresses of all workstations with the VLAN to which it belongs. This provides a mapping address of VLAN-to-MAC. This mapping format allows guests to move inside the network and fix to any of the switches and maintaining the VLAN  configuration. The initial workload required to configure the VMPS is now huge therefore dynamic VLANs are quite rare. When a host is joined to a control button or a switch, it is tested for the VMPS database for its VLAN association prior to the activation of the port and its assignment to a VLAN. This prevents a foreign host accessing a network by simply connecting a workstation to a wall socket.

What is the difference between VLAN Static and Dynamic VLAN?

The main difference between static and dynamic VLANs is that static VLANs are manually configured by allocating ports to a VLAN whereas dynamic VLANs make use of a database that maintains VLAN-to-MAC plotting to find out the VLAN to which a particular host is connected. This provides more flexibility in the dynamic VLANs that allow guests to move in the network as opposed to static networks. But to configure the VMPS server that contains the mapping of VLAN-to-MAC requires the too much of the primary work.
