Difference Between Steel and Aluminium

Aluminum is an abundant material and is an element while steel is an alloy. Aluminum and Steel have some common applications but they are entirely different from each other.

Steel is basically is an alloy and made of carbon and iron. Most of the items that we use in our day to day life are made up of steel. Steel is being used from last 4000 years. By the end of seventh century steel came into existence and very soon it captured the market. The production of steel is done at very huge scale to meet the requirements of different industries. Bessemer process made the production of steel cheap and economic. Steel is also one of the most commonly used materials in construction and vehicles.

Aluminum is also seen very easily in our day to day life because it is non-ferrous metal and abundantly available in nature. Aluminum is extracted from bauxite ore and is third most abundant material in the earth’s crust. It is non-corrosive and light and this is why it is widely used in aerospace industry. It is also used in making explosives, utensils and even the foils that we used in packing food.

Some of the differences between Steel and Aluminum

*  Aluminum is an element and steel is an alloy.

*  Aluminum is highly reactive but steel is not.

*  To prevent from the reaction, aluminum has to be mixed with other elements. On the other hand there is no need to mix any other element in steel.

*  Steel is more malleable in comparison to aluminum

*  Aluminum is basically used in car manufacturing industry; on the other hand steel is used in weapon industry.

*  Aluminum is light in weight in comparison to steel.
