Difference between This and That

This and That are two different words in English language need to be used with precision and accuracy in writing and speaking.

Used as a demonstrative pronoun, the word ‘this’ indicates a nearby object or a thing. On the contrary, that’ despite being a demonstrative pronoun denotes far placed object or a thing. In simple words, you used ‘this’ to refer subjects which are in sight or else, you use that.

  • Look at this flower.
  • It is easy to cross that FOB.

In the first sentence, the word ‘this’ is used in regard to a horse which falls within the range of one’s eyesight whereas the word ‘that’ is used as a demonstrative pronoun to refer a FOB which may not fall in one’s range of sight. And this is the most important difference between the two words.

The words ‘this’ and ‘that’ are also be used as adjectives in English language. Sample this, “This dress looks good” and “It is easy to sing that lullaby”. In both of these sentences, ‘this’ and ‘that’ are used as adjectives.  ‘This’ also see its use inn affirmative sentences such as ‘this is alright’. Both of them can be used together when one wants to say that all things have been done or finished on one’s part such as ‘I have done this and that, it is time to go home now.’
