Difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes
In Type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin-dependent), your body loses the ability to produce insulin, the hormone that controls the absorption of sugar into body cells. The insulin is produced by the pancreatic hormone-producing beta cells, and Type 1 diabetes is caused by the fact that these cells are damaged and destroyed. This analysis process is now seen in most cases is mediated by the body’s own immune system, an autoimmune process.
Insulin sooner or later
Treatment of classical type 1 diabetes is insulin. Without such treatment the patient dies. Some patients, especially those with the disease in adulthood, have a slower development of diabetes. Once diagnosed, many of these patients don’t have much insulin production left to survive for up to one or more years of oral medications that stimulate insulin formation. Such oral medications are used in type 2 diabetes. Those patients with slowly evolving type 1 diabetes must sooner or later opt for insulin treatment.
Diet, pills or insulin
Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of decreased sensitivity in the body to insulin (called insulin resistance), with an increased insulin requirements as a result, and an insufficient ability to respond to this increased demand with increased insulin formation, leading to a relative insulin deficiency and high blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is most common in the elderly, but also occurs in adolescents and young adults, and is linked to overweight / obesity. Type 2 diabetes is not caused by autoimmunity, but what causes the disease is not known, as with Type 1 diabetes is heredity. Treatment for Type 2 diabetes are medicines and controlled diet that increase insulin sensitivity or insulin binding.
Can be difficult to resolve
Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are two different diseases with similar symptoms. This means that it can be difficult to classify them. To make an accurate diagnosis is important so that the patient gets the right treatment that clarifies the causes of the disease
