Difference Between UN General Assembly and Security Council

The United Nations has two major parts namely the UN General Assembly and Security Council. The UN was created after World War II in the wake of establishing peace among nations. It is an international organization. It was founded in 1945 and replaced the League of Nations which was created at first place to oppose Japan and Nazi Germany.  UN works to develop communication between member states and create peace worldwide. General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Secretariat, International Court of Justice and UN Trusteeship Council are six major subsidiary organizations of the UN. The aim and purpose of establishment of each organization is different.  These execute different work of the UN worldwide.

Along with these six, World Health Organization (WHO), World Food Program (WFP) and United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) are some important agencies which are associated with the UN.

Security Council is an indispensable part of the UN. The work of Security Council is to maintain and manage peace and security throughout the world. It organizes peace missions in battle torn countries.  The charter of the UN has authorized Security Council to place physical and economic sanctions against defaulter members on an international basis. It can even decide to wage a military action in extreme conditions to establish peace.  Along with that, SC has the right to intervene in any international dispute or friction.

The five permanent members namely US, UK, China, France and Russia have the authorities and powers to govern the decisions of the Security Council.

Headquartered at NY, the SC has other 15 non-permanent members which are entitled for 2 years and elected on the basis of votes given by the member states.  The SC can call for an emergency meeting anytime. The most important feature of SC is the veto right of permanent members. Veto is a right which can forestall the adoption any decision or action.

On the other hand, all the 192 member states of the UN are part of UN General Assembly. It is a very important and major organ of the UN which is involved in allocating budget for the UN, recommending various organs and agencies to the UN and non-permanent members to the SC. The work tasks of General Assembly are termed as General Assembly resolutions.  Unlike SC, the work of General Assembly doesn’t include security and peace. General Assembly can ask their members to vote on admission or expulsion of members, election of members in different organs and budgetary considerations.

Unlike SC, there is no unilateral voting system of Veto. Any decision with two- third majority is claimed as passed.  Every member can cast his votes once at a time.

Hence, it is cleared that both SC and General Assembly are integral and indispensable part of UN. Both domains have different tasks allotted to smooth the processes of the UN while aiming for world peace and preventing wars.
