The difference between Afghanistan and Pakistan

Afghanistan and Pakistan are two countries that are in the news on a daily basis since September 11, 2001. Many people think that because they are located in Asia and that they share a border that they are very similar. However, these two countries are quite different in many ways.

Afghanistan

Located in central Asia, Afghanistan is a very mountainous country. It has an area of 251,772 square miles and has five international borders – Pakistan, Iran, China, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Islam is the religion of the country. At one time there were several religions in Afghanistan. Up until the mid-1990’s, there were Hindus and Sikhs living in some of the cities and there was a Jewish community that left to make their home in Israel.

Afghanistan was once a colony of Great Britain, but it obtained its independence in 1919. At this time, the Treaty of Rawalpindi was signed and agreed that the British territory of India would not extend past the Khyber Pass. The British also stopped subsidizing the country as well.

The climate of Afghanistan is characterized by hot, dry summers and severely cold winters. Agriculture is very important to the economy of this country. Grapes, apricots, melons, pomegranates and other dry fruits are produced in this country. The rug making industry has also experienced a significant rate of growth in recent years and since 2003, sixteen banks have opened in the country.

Education is important in Afghanistan with many universities, one of which is the popular Kabul Medical University. The people of the country are very proud of their culture, their religion and their ancestry. The national sport of Afghanistan is called Buzkashi and it is very similar to the game of polo. When it comes to culture, this country is considered the seat of classical Persian poetry.

Pakistan

Pakistan is located in Southern Asia and even though it shares a border with Afghanistan, it also shares borders with Iran, China and India. It is a larger country with a measurement of 307,374 square miles. Pakistan has a coastline because it lies along the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Islam is the principal religion of Pakistan, but at one time this country was the seat of several ancient cultures. These were the Bronze Age Indus Valley civilization, the Vedic, Persian, Turco-Mongol, Islamic and Sikh cultures.

Pakistan was a colony of Great Britain until 1947 when it was created in the division of India. The country has both a tropical climate and a temperate one. The amount of rainfall varies throughout the year.

Pakistan is a semi-industrialized nation. There has been a great contribution to the economy of the country with the Islamabad Stock Exchange. The country has very modern system of education with more than 730 technical and vocational institutions.

There is a great sense of pride in the culture and the arts in Pakistan. There is a lot of variety in the music of the country with Qawwali and Ghazal singing being very popular in all parts of Pakistan.

    Afghanistan is the only non western country that was never a colony. The Afghans beat the British. They have never been a colony. Very stupid article.
