Difference Between Editing and Proofreading

For many people editing as well as proofreading are one and the same thing. But in reality, there exists a basic difference in the techniques involved in carrying out the two processes that are all about checking written or printed matter for any grammatical, linguistic or syntax error.

Proof reading is all about checking the written or printed matter for any kind of spelling or printing mistakes or any syntax error. There are several softwares in the market nowadays that perform the function of proofreading e.g. Microsoft word. These check the typed word document for all the types of errors that exist. Proofreading is much easier and better than editing.

Editing is also like proof reading but it involves checking grammatical errors and typos error, checking the entire document to see whether the overall meaning is all right or not and also checking whether the words are placed properly or not etc. it is much more strenuous than the work of proof reading and it requires a much more involvement in comparison to the proofreading. Editing a document also involves the complete removal or deletion or reframing of certain part of the document.

Proofreading needs to be very accurate and is an important part of the producing a proper document because poor grammar as well as vocabulary reduces the communicability of a particular write-up.

Editing is also an indispensable aspect of producing an error free document as it increases the effect that the articles have on the reader. An article that has been properly edited and proof read is well appreciated by all the readers.

Thus although both aim at creating a flawless error less article, there are several differences that exist between the two.
